While many people were speculating whether or not Microsoft would be using embedded Windows Media Player for their upcoming YouTube, Google Video, etc competitor product called Soapbox, it was recently announced that they would be using both.
Soapbox will actually detect what browser you will be using and other tech specs to decide whether to embed Windows Media for Internet Explorer/Windows users and embedded Adobe Flash videos for Firefox/Windows users and Safari/Mac OS users.
Customizing such an application explains one of the reasons why Microsoft is one of the late entrants in the video streaming market.
