Approver, a new document collaboration application

Approver is a document collaboration application launched by Jeffrey McManus, a former Yahoo developer. It lets you create or upload documents and request feedback on them. It’s a rather simple but useful application.

The sign up process is short. Once you verify your email and login, you are taken to a simple “My Documents” page. From this page, you can create or upload a new document.

Once you create a document, Approver requests you to list the email addresses of friends or colleagues you would like to share the document with as shown below. You can either have a friend or colleague review a document or approve it. Approver also lets you choose whether to allow the friend or colleague to edit the document.

Approver then gives you the option to set a deadline for the document. You can also add comments to the document. Once you save the document, the collaborators are sent an email alert. If you request a review of a document, all the reviewer can do is look over the document and comment on it. If you request an approval of a document, the approver can simply select “approve document” once they approve of it. If you give a reviewer or approver editing capabilities, they can make changes to your document.

I did catch a few bugs in the system. Unfortunately, I was not able to review all the collaborative mechanics of Approver because of a database error. I would have really liked to see how one approves and edits a document.

To create more then one document, you must become a paid member. A premium account is $5.95 a month or $39.95 a year. With a premium account, you can create and share up to 50 documents at one time and invite up to 50 people at a time to review your documents.

All in all, I like Approver. I do think its pay model may be problematic. Writely is a more evolved document collaboration platform that’s completely free. But the collaborative features on Approver do stand out. Its ease of use also stands out. I’ll be sure to keep my eyes Approver.

    Hi Shan,

Thanks for the review. I’m having a look at the error you ran into — it looks like this might be something unique to you (no one has run into this problem before). It’s possible that you tickled something new that we introduced in our last production push on Saturday — I’ll have a look and let you know what happened.

I’d be interested to hear more about why you think Writely is “more evolved” — they have a better in-browser word processor, but that isn’t the problem that Approver has set out to solve. We actually don’t look at Writely as competitive with Approver at any rate — they’re trying to give people a free alternative to Word and we’re trying to give people an alternative to sending documents around in email.

Jeff, thanks for looking into the error. I have managed quite a few .NET development projects in the past so it would be great to know what caused it.

As for Writely - by saying “more evolved”, I meant that it does also allow users to share documents in a similar manner Approver does. You can either just share a document with a group of people or you can invite individuals to collaborate. It also logs all document revisions by collaborators. Like I said, I do really like how Approver is set-up because of its simplicity. I think its simplicity and ease of use will definitely be one of its strong selling points. I also really liked the guided tour. Its a great way to let users know exactly whats inside. I am sure you will hear lots of good things about Approver from the blogging community. I am involved with a startup also so I know how good it feels to get noticed. :-)

So you can share documents you create in the browser with Writely like you can with Approver, but I’m pretty sure that the similarities end there. Approver lets you upload files you create with Microsoft Office, Acrobat, image editing software, and so forth — pretty sure that Writely doesn’t let you do any of that. Not to say that it’s not great at what it does, just that it’s not comparable in a lot of ways. Approver isn’t about getting you to dump your word processor in favor of an in-browser editor. (My sense is that most people solved their word processor problem in 1988 or so.)

I did find the source for the error you ran into and pushed a fix just now, by the way — it was nothing having to do with .NET, it was just a string comparison that didn’t take into account the fact that anyone would ever want to create a three-character document. Fixed now. :)
