Something Fishy about Flapdaddy’s Competition

Flapdaddy Productions, Inc. has just launched a social network called Flapdaddy.com with a million dollar talent competition. Flapdaddy allows users to customize profiles through video and audio mediums as well. Flapdaddy also boasts that people without programming knowledge can easily customize their profiles.

Flapdaddy ContestWhen users enter these contests, they can invite other people to join and have them rate the talent entry. Something seems fishy about this contest because FinanceVisor reported “an annual grand prize which is projected to be worth up to $1 million in cash, services and prizes [source]” is offered.  I wonder what the $1 million in “services” could be? One million dollars in Flapdaddy premium services plus a lifetime membership?  Why can’t they just say that they would give $1 million in cash to the winner?  Other prizes are offered periodically as well, but to qualify for these prizes, you need a premium account which will cost you $64.95.  But you can upload as many videos as you want! W0oT!

Speaking of uploading videos to your profile, Flapdaddy looks very similar to MySpace.  Check this out, I’m one of the Cool New People that joined FlapDaddy
Flapdaddy Online
And this is MySpace telling users who the cool new people are too!
MySpace Cool New People
Why is it that Flapdaddy looks almost the same as MySpace?  The navigation scheme looks the same and even the cool new people feature above looks the same.  In the Flapdaddy cool new people, you will notice that it says “Online Now” under my name which I’m sure MySpace has also.

After talking to Shan about Flapdaddy’s MySpace similarities, he informed me that the answer could be here: [phpFox].  Looks like you can buy a website to look like MySpace from phpFox for about $300.  If Flapdaddy did use phpFox and five users buy the $64.95 premium service, then Flapdaddy would surpass breaking even in terms of software cost.

Before users sign-up for this, I would be a little bit wary about the T&Cs.  Find out exactly what the grand prize entails.  There seems to be a lot of fine print here and paying $64.95 for a social network is costly.
