Yahoo! Inc (NASDAQ: YHOO) has partnered with CBS Corporation (NYSE: CBS) to show news clips provided by 16 of CBS’ TV stations around the country. This deal is coincidentally announced about one week after the Google-YouTube acquisition. Currently YouTube also has a deal with CBS. CBS has its own channel on YouTube where you can find news article videos as well.
With this partnership, Yahoo! would be allowed to share 10-20 news clips from the CBS stations. These clips will start showing up on Tuesday. Yahoo! plans to share the revenue generated by advertisements from this arrangement with CBS.
Industry analysts have been questioning as to whether this is the right approach since YouTube banked on allowing the sharing of amateur video creators. Dmitry Shapiro, chief exec of Veoh Networks stated “Yahoo almost seems to be telling people what they should be watching instead of letting them make their own choices.”Â
However, as of July 2006, Yahoo! was the #1 place where the most users have streamed videos at whopping 38 million people. Google had 7.5 million before buying out YouTube.
There list of the CBS TV stations where content will be provided from is [here].
