Back in May 2007, it was rumored that Sony was pursuing Club Penguin for a $450 million acquisition. But it appears those talks fell apart and Disney swooped in and bought Club Penguin for $350 million.

“Club Penguin embodies principles that are of the utmost importance to Disney, providing high-quality family entertainment and fostering parental trust,” said Disney’s president and CEO Bob Iger. “The founders have woven together new technologies and creativity to build an incredibly compelling, immersive entertainment experience for kids and families.”

One of the biggest benefits of Club Penguin compared to other social networks is that it is kid-friendly. The games on Club Penguin especially make it an enjoyable experience for kids also.

“We have been actively searching for an organization that not only shares our values and concerns for children, but also has the ability and desire to help us bring Club Penguin to more children throughout the world,” added Lane Merrifield, one of Club Penguin’s co-founders. “We’ve found that partner in Disney.”

Disney does not seem to want to change Club Penguin’s operations much as far as making the founders relocate from Kelowna, Canada.
