TierraNatal, A New Hispanic Social Network Worth Checking Out

TierraNatal LogoTierraNatal is a new social network tailored towards a Hispanic community.  The social network allows friends and family between Mexico and the United States to stay connected.  To gain a better exposure to the uniqueness of each town in Mexico, TierraNatal allows users to explore them by using a simple pull-down menu and hyperlinked map.

Interestingly, there is a debate as of right now about whether a man of Hispanic origin, Carlos Slim Helú’s net worth surpasses Bill Gates as the world’s richest person.  Carlos is supposedly worth $67.8 billion and he controls the Teléfonos de México (Telmex), Telcel and América Móvil companies.  Telmex controls roughly 90% of the Mexican landline telephone market according to Wikipedia.

This is important to note because this simply means that as Carlos and his companies gain power, Mexico will become even more wired, thus the demand of Mexican-oriented social networks will rise.  TierraNatal is one that is paving that path.  The company started about one week ago.

“We view the Internet as a powerful tool to explore new places, meet new people and – more importantly – to reconnect and stay connected with the people and places that have made us who we are. We created TierraNatal as a conduit to reconnect and explore our home towns, cement old bonds and to create new ones, and to share our lives and dreams with new friends as well as the people that are dear to our hearts” stated the Founder of TierraNatal, Liliana Townshend.

After doing a quick translation search on Babelfish, I learned that Tierra Natal actually means ‘native earth.’  There is a press release available on eMediaWire too.  TierraNatal was designed by the digital-telepathy agency and there is a mini-bio of Liliana on the blog.
