Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) Mac sales have grew 38% year after year and has beat out Acer for the number of shipments made in the second quarter of 2008. Apple still have a long way to have Dell and HP in their sights, but it seems like the sky is the limit for Steve Jobs right now. Given the increase in Mac sales, this is bad news for Microsoft because they are losing marketshare for pushing their operating system to consumers.
What is Apple’s overall marketshare for computer usage? Gartner and IDC are two survey firms that have both looked at Apple’s U.S. marketshare. Gartner pegged Apple as 8.5% penetration, up from 6.4% last year. IDC has Apple at 7.8% penetration, up from 6.2% last year. It is interesting to note that Apple did not let the economy affect their prices whereas other PC manufacturing companies slashed prices.
“If you do count iPhones and iPod touches…you get a whole new ball game. That three million computer lead that HP and Dell have on Apple starts to shrink. Apple sold a million iPhones last week,” stated Seth Weintraub of 9to5Mac. “iPods are also flying off the shelves and with the 2.0 software, they do Exchange, Cisco VPN, Office apps, IM, and have 1000 3rd party apps waiting for them. That is a pretty good computer platform if you ask us!”
