This is Microsoft’s second round of major layoffs.   Microsoft announced that they may layoff up to 5,000 people shortly after the 2nd quarter earnings were reported.  Yesterday about 3,000 were laid off.  The first round involved 1,400.

“As part of the plan we announced in January to reduce costs and increase efficiencies, today we are eliminating additional positions across several areas of the company,” reported Microsoft in a statement. “While job eliminations are always difficult, we are taking these necessary actions in response to the global economic downturn.”

The software giant plans to hire about 2,000-3,000 employees this year in other areas of focus for the company.
