Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 To Have New Kilimanjaro Features

As Microsoft prepares to launch SQL Server 2008 version R2, they are scaling it to be able to work with about 256 logical processors concurrently.  The software giant is also working on improving upon Kilimanjaro, an add-on to the software.  Kilimanjaro will be a newer version and will use the same code base as SQL Server 2008.

“It is new capabilities but it is also a new release,” Wahbe said. “We haven’t been changing the core. That’s the reason we named it R2.”  The ability to take on 256 processors was previously upgraded in Windows Server 2008 R2.

Another feature that SQL Server 2008 will support is the ability to work on clusters with different chips.  Previously the clusters could only work on only the same Intel or AMD hardware.  Both brands cannot be combined in the new clusters, but at least there can be a mixing of the chips.
