Mindopia.com is a website that is currently in beta. On the homepage, there are several featured experts for different careers. Michael Davis, the founder of the company said that he built Mindopia out of frustration from wanting to make his own shift in career. He was a Hollywood agent at the time.
Through his previous career he was able to get some help from certain celebrities on the project. The actor section features Austin Powers star Mike Myers and the Editor in Chief at Marvel Comics Joe Quesada.
Mindopia.com appears to be building the featured career guides around the videos that they have available. For example, there is a Medical Assistant as a featured career but a doctor isn’t. There is a featured career as a Dental Assistant, but not being a dentist.
Currently the company is working on an angel round of funding, but Davis is also interested in a first round of funding from a venture capital firm.
Apple Inc. is sitting on billions of cash so many analysts are speculating that Apple will be on the acquisition market. It turns out that Apple has been spending some of their cash on buying eye-tracking technology recently. Apparently Apple has been buying eye-tracking technology components from Tobii Technology. Tobii is a small start-up based in Stockholm that recently closed about $21.5 million in Series B funding.
Tobii’s Technology’s eye tracking technology can be added to devices and can be used to determine “the efficacy of advertisements, applications and websites [PEHub].” Tobii’s products cost roughly between $7,000-$35,000, depending on how advanced the client wants it to work.
According to Amadeus Capital investor Jeppe Zink, Tobii has sold technology to Internet portal companies too. As users read a screen, there is automatic text scrolling. Tobii’s technology is not expected to appear in mobile devices yet, but there is a chance that it could be added to high-end desktops and laptops in the near future.
Eric Scott decided to make an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for being the fastest man on a jetpack. He had scored a maximum speed of 68MPH as timed by a police radar gun. The propulsion of the jetpack was hydrogen peroxide-based technology. The event took place at the Scotland Knockhill Racing Circuit. Now Guinness will be deciding whether this feat will make the record books.
Facebook application Dogbook started about a couple of years ago. The point of Dogbook is for dog owners on Facebook to connect with each other. Features include the ability to upload dog photos and meet up with other dog owners to go for walks.
Complementing Dogbook is another service called Catbook. Both services were started by Canadian Geoffrey Roche and his son Alex. Recently Dogbook hit over 800,000 bios of dogs. Advertisers on Dogbook includes Purina.
Check out the video below of FOX News talking about the service. It looked like they had a ball doing it:
Microsoft Corporation is continuing to push their Laptop Hunters series of commercials through different characters. Apple recently did a spoof of the Laptop Hunters commercials themselves with the Mac vs. PC characters and a girl named Megan.
In this commercial, the two girls Lauren and Sue were given $1700 to buy a PC. They ended up picking up a Dell XPS 13. I believe that this was the first time that the Laptop Hunters series of people ended up buying a Dell. The last few times the characters ended up buying an HP. The cost ended up being $971.99. They decided to pick up that laptop after seeing that a Mac laptop was $2,000.
I don’t know how many more of these commercials Microsoft will be releasing before they start a new marketing campaign, but I think I find myself becoming bored already. Even the Apple vs. PC commercials that Apple uses are starting to get pretty boring too. C’mon marketing companies, give us something fresh!
About a month ago I wrote about how Michael Massimino is preparing to tweet from outer space. Massimino’s mission is to overhaul the Hubble telescope. Well Massimino is keeping up to his promise to live tweet from space under the username Astro_Mike.
He has sent out the following tweets since arriving in space:
Massimino is the first astronaut to “tweet from space.” Massimino is not necessarily live updating because he writes an e-mail to support personnel on Earth that update his Twitter account for him.
For those of you that have a problem and don’t consider that really tweeting, put this into perspective. Only recently have they discovered how to get WiFi on plans and that is only 30,000-40,000 feet from the ground. On average, the moon is about 238,000 feet away from Earth.
Apple executives announced this week that the iPhone will continue to grow in market share and they are considering several options to keep it going. Financial firm Oppenheimer stopped by several companies as part of a bus tour to conduct interviews about strategy going forward.
Oppenheimer stopped by Apple yesterday and asked about new products and market share. Apple said that there is still tremendous potential for the Mac and the iPhone to grow in market share.
In Europe, Mac unit sales have grown 5% and revenue has grown 18%. However in the U.S. Mac units sold have declined 8%. Senior analyst at Oppenheimer Yair Reiner stated that the “iPhone is still in its early days and could gain share by: providing more functionality; lowering prices; growing geographically; or segmenting the market with different models.”
Reiner stated that these are just options that Apple is considering. The company did not necessarily mean that they will do all of those options. Reiner expects that a combination of those options will take place within the next 6 months.
In terms of the AT&T partnership, Apple said that they were happy with the company and competition has been good. But Australia is an example of where three carriers are selling the iPhone.
