Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen is working on a new project called Xiant. Xiant is an e-mail startup that makes using Microsoft Outlook much easier. Xiant Filer allows users to make message filing much easier. There is no need to change around Microsoft Outlook to make Filer work. It integrates quite well within Microsoft Outlook.
There is a one click interface with Xiant Filer for filing messages. There is also batch filing which allows users to move batches of individual messages.
Working on Xiant may help Allen forget about all the money he lost through his investment with Charter Communications. Allen invested $7 billion for a 52% stake in Charter, but sold nearly all of his Class A common stock holdings for $996 million last week according to PeHUB.
Xiant is available as a free 60 day trial download from their website.
One of Xiant’s biggest competitors is Y-Combinator startup Xobni. Xobni has about $14.6 million in funding between Y-Combinator, several VC firms, Cisco, the BlackBerry Partners fund, and several private investors. However Allen is worth about $10.5 billion as of this year.

“Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning,” stated Apple CEO Steve Jobs. “With over 50,000 applications available from Apple’s revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.”
On Friday Apple started selling the iPhone 3G S mobile phones in retail stores. Between the pre-orders and the retail store sales, about one million Apple iPhone 3G S units have been sold. That is pretty staggering considering this is the third generation model.
But that’s not all. About 6 million people have downloaded and installed the iPhone OS 3.0 on their iPhones within five days of its release. This is great news for Apple, developers, and AT&T. Its a much bigger customer base for everyone. AT&T introduced a new MMS plan add-on. Apple makes money from AT&T for every iPhone that gets activated. And developers are getting a cut out of the 50,000 applications that are being downloaded in some way.

Microsoft Bing search market share has increased to about 12% since it launched. This is exciting for Microsoft considering Live.com didn’t do as well in fighting Google’s market share.
At a luncheon in Chicago last week, Steve Ballmer said that he was willing to spend 5%-10% of the company’s operating income over the next 5 years.
Microsoft’s operating income in 2008 was $22 billion. That means that Microsoft would end up spending as high as $5.5-$11 billion over the next 5 years. ”We invested in Xbox for years and now it generates nice economic returns for us,” added Ballmer.

OneRiot has updated their search algorithm to include real-time data for link indexing and ranking. Some of the search results from the real-time stream are powered by Digg and Twitter. OneRiot’s Pulse stream uses a similar ranking system as Google PageRank.
The Pulse search algorithm has been around since OneRiot launched, but they have improved it since then. Pulse’s results will be considered based on domain authority, timeliness, individual reputation, etc. Pulse accounts for credible Twitter and Digg users.
“We’re also getting a lot of leverage from our Artificial Intelligence systems that constantly ‘learn’ how to improve the way we rank results,” stated the OneRiot Blog recently.
