Google has reported to the Securities and Exchange Commission that they have invested $2.6 million in the genetic testing startup 23andMe as part of a Series B round of funding.  23andMe was co-founded by Google co-founder Sergey Brin’s wife Anne Wojcicki.

It is uncertain whether the deal was made directly through Google or through their Ventures subsidiary.  The $2.6 million round of fund was part of a $12.6 million Series B round.  The other $10 million came from Sergey Brin’s personal wealth of $12 billion.  This brings 23andMe’s total funding to about $21.6 million.  Other investors include Genentech, New Enterprise Associates, and Mohr Davidow Ventures.

Google owns a minority interest in 23andMe and also plans to lease space to the genetics company.  Google wrote in the filing that they took measures to ensure the decision before investing to make the agreement was free of conflict of interest.  Sergey Brin was not part of the investment discussions according to Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

Since the Palm Pre has been released, they have sold over 100,000 devices.  Many of the retail stores selling the Pre had sold out on the first day giving Sprint a sales record day.  Over the first 12 days of the phone being on the market, about 666,000 applications were downloaded from the Palm App Catalog according to mobile analytics company Medialets.

These 666,000 downloads were made across about 30 applications available so far.  When Palm first launched the catalog, they had about 18 applications available for download.  No new applications were introduced in the last week.  When Apple launched their store, they had over 500 applications for download and millions of iPhone and iPhone 3G phones on the market downloading them.

Palm doesn’t have many applications available because there is limited access to the webOS software development kit.   And according to a TechCrunch commenter, the Palm OS doesn’t allow access to the 3D card which limits the number of entertainment applications.

Sub.Digger+ Digg Script Makes Tracking Friends More Intuitive, But Puts Users At Risk

subdigger

Sub.Digger+ is a new script made for social news website Digg.com.  Sub.Digger+ makes using Digg.com a lot more intuitive especially if you and your friends are active on the website.  The service showcases a friends’ story submissions in an iframe slideshow format.  Digg allows you to view a friends’ submission too, but it is delivered in a way where you have to click through many pages to see them.

The problem with Sub.Digger+ is that it is a script.  Digg’s terms of service explicitly states that users that have scripts may be banned.  This is the reason why Brian Cuban was banned and why user MrBabyMan Andrew Sorcini was interrogated last year.  Digg user DiggBoss sent an e-mail to Digg admins about why his scripts should be allowed and why users should not be banned.  Digg employee Jen Burton did not give much of a response to the scripts except that the company was tweaking the algorithm to make Digg users feel like it was not necessary to use scripts.

To get started with Sub.Digger+, go to http://sub.diggerplus.com/ and type in your user name.  After that the Digg toolbar will appear at the top and the Sub.Digger+ toolbar will appear at the bottom.  All of your friends’ latest submissions will appear in ascending order by submission.  There is even a list view feature that shows over 100 submitted friend stories at once.
