Research In Motion Files For Hybrid Capacitive Resistive Patent

BlackBerry production company Research In Motion has filed for a patent for hybrid capacitive and resistive screens.  The nice thing about these capacitive screens is that their displays are faster, they are more responsive, and they support multi-touch.  Capacitive displays are more expensive than resistive screens.

Capacitive screens are sensitive to touch and is more responsive than resistive screens.  However  resistive screens are generally cheaper to make and is more accurate. A capacitive screen with the accuracy of a resistive screen would be nice for consumers.  But let’s not forget that there would be added costs to hybrid screen technology if the patent does go through since the costs would increase for RIM.

Capacitive touchscreens uses capacitive material to hold electrical charges. Touching the capacitive screen changes the amount of charges at a different points of contact. Resistive screens use the pressure from fingers to causes conductive and resistive layers of circuitry to touch each other which changes the resistance of circuits.
