Intel Acquires RapidMind and Cilk

Intel Corporation has acquired two companies in the last 30 days.  The two companies are Cilk and Rapidmind.  Both companies are small and employ less than 50 people.  Intel also acquired Wind River Systems this past June.

“Over the last few years, there has been a gradual emergence of multicore microprocessors. It’s put parallelism in more and more machines,” stated Intel Chief Evangelist and Director of Marketing and Sales James Reinders. “If you look at traditional applications, ones that we use everyday, it’s fair to say that most are not exploiting parallelism–at least not to the full extent.”

Cilk develops software called Cilk++ which are extensions to C++ that allows developers to create multithreaded applications and setup paths for multicore legacy applications.

RapidMind is a Waterloo, Canada based company that assists applications to work on multi-core processors.  Essentially this reduces the cost and time-line of application development.
