Intel Corporation has acquired two companies in the last 30 days. The two companies are Cilk and Rapidmind. Both companies are small and employ less than 50 people. Intel also acquired Wind River Systems this past June.
“Over the last few years, there has been a gradual emergence of multicore microprocessors. It’s put parallelism in more and more machines,” stated Intel Chief Evangelist and Director of Marketing and Sales James Reinders. “If you look at traditional applications, ones that we use everyday, it’s fair to say that most are not exploiting parallelism–at least not to the full extent.”
Cilk develops software called Cilk++ which are extensions to C++ that allows developers to create multithreaded applications and setup paths for multicore legacy applications.
RapidMind is a Waterloo, Canada based company that assists applications to work on multi-core processors. Essentially this reduces the cost and time-line of application development.

Peerialism is a new, upcoming BitTorrent tracking software that is supposed to be released next month. The company promises to increase download speeds by 150% and to decrease the load on ISP networks by 20-50%. Peerialism’s software is based on OpenTracker software.
“In standard BitTorrent the tracker chooses a totally random number of peers for you. There are some good reasons for this since random actually gives some nice and robust network properties but in many cases this will force you to download for peers far away from you,” stated Andreas Dahlström, CTO and founder of Peerialism in an interview with TorrentFreak.
Peerialism supposedly selects peers to share files with more intelligently. The software picks peers based on geographical location. Based on geographical locations, download speeds can be faster.

Generally the newspapers of the cities that Craigslist adds to their list struggles to compete. Craigslist offers free classifieds for most cities abroad and domestic. Newspapers charge for classifieds most people would turn to Craigslist instead.

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone has given credit to developers that have added location features within their applications despite have limited API support. Twitter users will have the option to add longitude and latitude information to any tweet.
iPhone application Tweetie already gives the option to find out who is tweeting within a certain number of kilometers from you. Stone said that this type of feature would be useful for those who are following events such as concerts or earthquakes.
The feature will be given to platform developers first and then will be added on Twitter.com itself.
“We’re going to release geolocation to platform developers before we add the feature to Twitter.com. Most of the mobile applications people use and love are built by Twitter platform developers,” stated Stone. “Developers will have access to this new geolocation feature early which means it will most likely be available on your app of choice before it’s available on Twitter’s web site. Later, we’ll add it to our mobile web site and Twitter.com as well.”

Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) has won a case in an appeals court that may help protect Internet radio stations from having to pay higher music royalties. This ruling is a blow to music labels such as BMG Music and Arista Records. The labels will not be given the right to demand Yahoo! LAUNCH Media to pay licensing fees for songs.
“It brings a great clarity to an area that has vexed innovators for a long time,” stated Digital Media Association Executive Director Jonathan Potter. “There’s been 10 years of litigation over this. Companies have been put out of business because of this issue.”
The appeals court determined that LAUNCHcast, the streaming music service through LAUNCH Media is not “interactive” enough to be considered for licensing fees. The appeals court said that LAUNCHcast does not have the predictability of songs that would cause listeners to stop buying music.
“LAUNCHcast’s listeners do not even enjoy the limited predictability that once graced the AM airwaves on weekends in America when ‘special requests’ represented love-struck adolescents’ attempts to communicate their feelings to ‘that special friend,’” stated the appeals court.
This decision came about eight years after Sony Music subsidiary decided to sue LAUNCH. A federal jury in Manhattan ruled in favor of LAUNCH in 2007 that rejected the music labels from receiving $100 million in damages.

Facebook has a new feature that allows companies or individuals to update their Twitter statuses through a Facebook Page. The developer of this feature was not Mark Zuckerberg or any of the FriendFeed guys or any of the Parakey guys. It was built by a lowly-paid summer intern.
More specifically it was built by Stanford University junior Michael Gummelt. “I was able to build this new feature from start to finish as a summer engineering intern. Next month I’ll head back to school, but I’m excited to see my work here live on through all of the people who now will both share on Facebook and tweet on Twitter right from their Facebook Pages,” wrote Gummelt on the Facebook blog.
Many celebrities and organizations boast the Twitter and Facebook Fans they have. The more Fans and Twitter followers people have, the more proactive they have to be in terms of updating. This feature will make it easy for them to maintain their online marketing profiles.
