Adam Goldstein, known as DJ AM passed away yesterday in a New York hotel. DJ AM most recently was found making mixtapes with Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker. Their mix tapes were quite popular on the Internet. Their latest mix tape was heavily promoted on Twitter, the micro-blogging website that Barker and AM are heavily active in using.
On September 19, 2008 Barker and AM were touring for their mix tape and their Lear jet crashed. Four people died in that accident, but Barker and AM miraculously survived. But since then AM and Barker were not the same. Barker and AM were considering suing Lear and Goodyear for $20 million this past March. DJ AM struggled to recover from his physical and mental injuries so he became addicted to drugs.
A few hours before DJ AM was found dead in his hotel room in New York, he sent out a tweet that said “New york, new york. Big city of dreams, but everything in new york aint always what it seems.” For those of you that enjoy rap music, you will quickly realize that these lyrics that are part of a song by Tha Dogg Pound called New York, New York.
Tha Dogg Pound was a group that was signed to Death Row Records between 1992 and 2002. The group comprised of Daz Dillinger and Kurupt. Snoop Doggy Dogg appeared on several of Tha Dogg Pound’s songs. The reason why the lyrics were saying that New York ain’t always what it seems is because there was a major conflict between East Coast and West Coast rappers at the time. This song was supposedly a response to a song called L.A., L.A. which was dissing members of Tha Dogg Pound.
Goldstein’s last tweet is quite interesting. Why he chose to quote Tha Dogg Pound’s song out of all the other songs about New York is a mystery, but one thing that is for sure is that AM will be missed. I downloaded both of his mix tapes with Barker and enjoyed playing them when driving around in my car. DJ AM also had an entertaining cameo in the 33rd episode of HBO show Entourage.

AdMob is one of the biggest advertising mobile companies. Most iPhone application developers sign up with AdMob as their advertising broker. AdMob just got a little bigger after announcing the acquisition of AdWhirl.
AdMob CEO Omar Hamoui said that the acquisition was made to create a transparent mobile ad exchange. Interestingly two months ago AdMob and AdWhirl were not playing nice with each other.
On July 22nd, AdMob wrote a blog post stated, “AdMob will no longer serve ads requested from iPhone apps that employ ad network mediation layers such as AdWhirl or Tapjoy. This change will enable us to provide our publishers and advertisers, as well as end users, with the best possible experience and results.”
The acquisition amount is not substantial because AdWhirl does not have much cash on hand nor do they have licensing deals in place with ad partners. AdMob’s traffic declined since they decided to stop using mediation layers. Quattro, another big iPhone ad company put their support behind AdWhirl. AdMob bought out AdWhirl for their assets, not for the company itself.

Intel Corporation has exceeded the Wall Street forecasts for the third quarter. The reason why is because of strong demand for their chips. This is good news for the economy considering Intel is the biggest chip company in the world. This indicates the economy as a whole is strengthening in the tech sector.
Intel expects sales for the quarter to be roughly $8.8 billion to $9.2 billion. Thomson Reuters analysts expected Intel’s Q3 revenues to be about $8.55 billion. Intel themselves were surprised by their revenues because they expected the economic downtown to drastically affect business.
Dell, the second largest PC manufacturing company also expects to have a solid year. “There are a lot of moving pieces in the PC industry as we prepare for a new operating system from Microsoft,” stated Doug Freedman, an analyst at Broadpoint AmTech in an interview with The New York Times.

Creative Commons has received $500,000 from 23andme co-founder Anne Wojcicki and Google co-founder Sergey Brin.
“We are delighted that the couple recognizes the importance of Creative Commons and has decided to invest in our work to support sharing, collaboration, and the spread of knowledge and creativity,” stated Melissa Reeder of Creative Commons on the company blog. “This gift – made in addition to the financial support that Google offers CC annually – will be used to support Creative Commons generally, with a focus on developing our Science Commons project, which Wojcicki and Brin are particularly excited about.”
Lawrence Lessig, the Creative Commons founder stepped down from the company last year to focus on Change Congress. Around the time that Lawrence left, Creative Commons received a $4 million grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
Interestingly ValleyWag points out that Creative Commons is chaired by Esther Wojcicki, the mother of Anne. Google also employs Esther as an educational consultant. Sounds like Brin likes to keep business and family together.

Several investors are considering making a bid on Skype, the voice-over-IP service owned by eBay. eBay bought out Skype for about $4.1 billion in September 2005 but failed to find a real way to integrate the service into their system.
Some of the investors considering making a bid includes Andreesen Horowitz and Index Ventures. Index Ventures was one of the early investors in Skype. There is also rumored to be another multi-billion dollar private equity company involved according to TechCrunch.
At one point eBay was considering having Skype have their own IPO. It is unclear whether the current Skype CEO Josh Silverman will still be involved if an acquisition does take place. While Silverman was running Skype, the company grew to $551 million in revenue this year. By 2011, eBay expects Skype to hit about $1 billion in revenues.
Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis both started Skype together shortly after KaZaa. If Skype gets acquired, then the private equity companies and investors would probably work towards an IPO.

China Unicom and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) have made a deal to sell the iPhone in China. That is great news for Apple iPhone developers because their customer base grow even bigger. Currently in China, there are about 687 million wireless subscribers.
The iPhone will be sold in China in the fourth quarter. And the China Unicom and Apple deal has been signed for about a 3 year contract. According to The Wall Street Journal China Unicom will not be sharing revenue with Apple but will buy them on wholesale and resell it to consumers.
The good news for Chinese consumers is that China Unicom will be subsidizing the phone. But there is no word on how much it will be subsidized. India on the other hand does not currently have any subsidizing phone making it harder for consumers there to afford it.
China Unicom has about 141 million subscribers as of this past July. China Unicom hopes to attract more high-end consumers. China Unicom will be rolling out a 3G network now. The 3G network will be launched by September 28.
One of the problems with launching the iPhone in this market is that there are already a good number of iPhone owners in China. About 1.5 million iPhones are floating around China that have been bought from overseas and have been jailbroken.
