Dell, AT&T, and Google are in a partnership to launch a smartphone, powered by Google Android next year according to The Wall Street Journal. AT&T would become the fourth major U.S. telecommunications company to sell a smartphone powered by Android.
Clearly this is an interesting turn because AT&T is exclusively selling the Apple iPhone in the U.S.. By selling smartphones powered by Android, that gives more choice to AT&T customers which essentially is not a good thing for Apple.
Google first announced the Android operating system in 2007 and launched it on about 9 smartphones since. Given that Dell does not have much experience in developing smartphones, all the companies involved have to be careful in making sure nothing goes awry.
Thus far Motorola, HTC, and Samsung have launched Android mobile phones. Nokia is rumored to be launching Android on a netbook too. Motorola launched a custom version of the Google Android operating system called Motoblur. The phone is expected to launch the vote in early 2010.
Sprint has just sent out a press release along with a pre-registration page about the launch of the Samsung Moment. The Moment is the brand name Samsung is going with for a phone that has been previously been called the InstinctQ in earlier reports. The Moment features include 800MHz processor, 3.2″ AMOLED screen, a 3.2 megapixel camera, and an optional trackpad. The price of the phone will be $179 with a 2 year contract, $50 instant savings, and $100 mail-in rebate. Availability of the phone starts November 1st.
Drew Carey, the star of The Drew Carey Show, the host of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, and the current host of The Price Is Right has made a bid for a Twitter account. Drew Carey initially said that he would bid up to $100,000 for the user name @Drew on Twitter if he reaches 100,000 followers by November 9th. The @Drew Twitter account is being auctioned off by Drew Olanoff, a man who was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. Olanoff will be donating the money from the bid to the Lance Armstrong LIVESTRONG foundation.
Back in August, we reported about 23andMe’s involvement in the #BlameDrewsCancer initiative. For every 500 unique tweets that used the #BlameDrewsCancer hashtag, the company would donate $1 to the cause.
Now Drew Carey said that he would increase his bid to $1 million for the @Drew account if his own Twitter account @DrewFromTV username hits 1 million followers by December 31, 2009. Carey said that he will also prorate the donation. So if he hits 500,000 followers, he will donate $500,000. So far Drew Carey has nearly 54,000 followers.
Detroit-based software company Compuware Corporation (NASDAQ:CPWR) is buying Gomez, a web applications company. The deal is expected to close at the end of November this year. Gomez has 272 employees and was founded in 1997. Gomez is based in Lexington, Massachusetts and the revenue in 2008 was $47 million.
Companies such as Yahoo! and Best Buy use Gomez software to test their websites. Gomez had filed for an IPO last year. Bob Paul, the President and COO of Compuware said that the merger would help the Detroit software company better serve business and IT companies that would like to get into the Internet applications market. Gomez has about 2,500 customers. Almost all of Gomez’s current employees will become Compuware employees.

When 38-year-old Donald Goodrich walked into the Apple store at the Kenwood Towne Centre in Cincinnati, Ohio he probably did not know he was going to end up being arrested shortly after. Goodrich was upset that his iPhone was not working properly and he told an Apple employee that he was upset. As a matter of fact, Goodrich stated he was, “So mad, I could pop a 9mm at it.”
The Apple employee told the employee that there wasn’t a need for shooting the iPhone. Goodrich insisted “I’ll do it right now. Look!” After that, he took opened his shirt which had a 9mm hand gun in it. The employee said that she’d get the iPhone fixed, but told the manager to cal the police. Goodrich was charged with aggravated menacing and causing fear of harm to the employee.
Goodrich was also charged with a concealed weapons charge for not telling the police he had a gun. However Goodrich did have a concealed weapons permit. The incident took place on October 1.

Jack Thompson is an activist and former attorney that lives in Coral Gables, Florida. Thompson is best known for speaking out against video game violence and/or sex in video games. Thompson claims that the anti-Thompson groups on Facebook has caused him “great harm and distress.” Thompson added that he felt threatened by some of the messages. And there are hundreds of these groups.
Below is a screen shot of one of the anti-Thompson groups.
Thompson compared his situation to the Barack Obama poll on Facebook which asked users whether the President should be assassinated or not. That poll was removed from the social network, but it had already spread pretty far. Thompson stated “Unlike our President, Thompson does not have the Secret Service to protect him.”
