Earlier today CNN.com invited people to check out their new website at the One Time Warner Center office in New York City. At the same meeting CNN President Jim Walton announced that the news company increased profits year over year. CNN receives 38 million visitors per month and has about 100 million monthly video views. In the websites entire history, it received 121 billion page views. The new CNN.com will launch on Monday. The Cable News Network is owned by Time Warner.
What do you get when you cross a nerd with a girlfriend that enjoys playing video games? You get a nerdy engagement proposal. The nerd in the video above used a program called Lunar Magic to modify Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System console. The boyfriend had his girlfriend play the game. When the girlfriend made Mario go into a warp zone pipe, there were a set of gold coins that stated “Lisa Will You Marry Me?”
After reading the gold coins, the boyfriend got on one knee and showed the ring. The girlfriend enthusiastically said yes and the two have been living happily ever after since. Is there anything you can’t do Mario? You’ve made Nintendo the giant that it is and made a geeky couple come together. I wonder if this kid was in the Lambda Lambda Lambda frat when he was in college. Nice job, Poindexter.
Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) has made the BlackBerry Bold 9700 announcement official. The 9700 previously had the codename Onyx. The Bold 9700 has a 3.2 megapixel camera and will have the BlackBerry OS 5.0 preinstalled. Instead of using a trackball the Bold 9700 will be using an optical trackpad. The Bold 9700 will ship in two different network options. The first is 900/1700/2100 and the second is the 800/850/1900/2100MHz 3G option. RIM said that “carriers around the world” would be selling the device. AT&T said they will be selling the device for $199 after mail in rebate and T-Mobile said that their version will support voice calling over WiFi.
Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) is challenging Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) by selling music. Google spent the last several weeks preparing deals with the four major music labels: Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music, EMI, and Universal Music Group. The new Google service is expected to be called Google Audio.
When Google Audio launches, I wouldn’t be surprised if YouTube changes their default music purchase promotion to their own service. Currently when watching music videos on YouTube, there is a link to buy the song on iTunes or Amazon.com.
I don’t expect Google to do very well in this service because iTunes has already monopolized the music download market. iTunes is the number one music retailer in the world, even beating Wal-Mart. Google attempted to challenge iTunes by selling videos through Google Video, but it did not have much of a business impact.
Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has made a deal with Twitter and Facebook. The deal is non-exclusive. Facebook and Twitter will both integrate real-time feeds of status updates and tweets into the Bing search engine service. Twitter hit about 5 billion tweets yesterday and Facebook has the most number of status updates than any other service. Facebook sends out an estimated 40 million status updates per day.
Microsoft Bing’s market share will benefit from this deal as real-time news is becoming a preference for people. Traditional news agencies are suffering from this and are cutting staff and newspaper circulation. Google will have to step it up if they want to retain their customer base.
Facebook users will be allowed to decide whether they want their status updates to be public or not. The financial details of the deal are undisclosed, but it is expected that the Redmond-based software company will be paying both Facebook and Twitter millions of dollars along with revenue-sharing deals. Microsoft owns about 1.7% of Facebook through a venture capital deal and has an exclusive advertising partnership with the social network.
Every once in a while, Microsoft attempts to make viral videos in order to gain the attention of an existing product or service. In this case they decided to make a humorous video honoring rejected mobile applications for the Windows Marketplace. By putting this video together, Microsoft indirectly knocks on the Apple App Store application approval process. Take a look and let us know what you think about the video in the comments.
Irish rock band U2 will be performing a concert this Sunday in Pasadena, California. The concert has already been sold out and YouTube will be streaming the concert for free and live. About 96,000 fans will be in the audience. The tour and video is being managed through U2′s partnership with Live Nation.
“The band has wanted to do something like this for a long time. As we’re filming the LA show, it’s the perfect opportunity to extend the party beyond the stadium. Fans often travel long distances to come to see U2 – this time U2 can go to them, globally,” stated U2 manager Paul McGuinness. The concert will be available on U2.com and on YouTube. The U2 360 Tour had started in June with the first concert taking place in Barcelona.
The U2 360 Tour has a Twitter account that you can follow too. Some of the tweets that the account sends out are official videos made by U2 representatives. I especially like the video of the CN Tower that they made in Toronto.
