100 SOCIAL MEDIA EXPERTS TO FOLLOW ON TWITTER Comments

  1. Gnuboss says:

Phew, that's quite the list – still, with all the outrageously cool people on Twitter it's pretty tough to whittle the list down to 100.

  2. Amit Chowdhry (Pulse2.com) says:

I agree Gnuboss. Making this list was very hard, but I tried to make a judgment based on followers and tweets. Since I don't have many yet… I didn't include myself in the list either.

  3. Gnuboss says:

    You're a funny guy, :)

Thanks again for the great post and congrats on your site, your 'professional hobby' is coming along very nicely.

  4. Jeff says:

My god , that's one hell of a list. No doubt the best of the best in their field though!

  5. Brad Sanders says:

    @Jasonbeahm
Posts social media content involving law and technology, as well as all kinds of other useful information.

  6. zazo says:

That's really the list man! PHEW!

  7. jimcaruso says:

    Nice list!

  8. Craig (lapp) says:

This list is completely moronic. To say someone is a Social Media expert because of the number of followers they have, or the number of tweets, just goes to show the author themselves have no clue what the word “social media” even means yet.

  9. Amit Chowdhry (Pulse2.com) says:

Its not based just on tweets and followers, but it is also based on the careers of those who are involved on the list. You may notice that most of the people on this list are entrepreneurs who built themselves up by the power of Twitter. Oh and the “moronic” comment. Takes one to know one.

  10. dantanner says:

Impressive list. However there is no licensing agency that says you are a Social Media expert, the value is in the perception or personal connections to the person who writes such a list.

  11. Amit Chowdhry (Pulse2.com) says:

Yup it is all opinionated. Absolutely no voting took place either. These are people that I would follow personally.

  12. John Lai says:

Wow That i am absolutely Honored that i am even mentiond in this list, thank you pulse2

    much appreciated

    John Lai
    @whoisjohnlai

  13. tom_abbott says:

Very interesting, as there are some interesting people here to follow. But I am afraid of those marketing types who have nothing better to do in the day than sit and feed twitter meaningless comments about daily life. I hope to find some meat.

  14. Rodney_Rumford says:

interesting list. wonder what qualifies them as experts? I might go so far as to call some of these people self important. While the criteria appears inconsistent; some great people on this list…

  15. morfikirler says:

    Nice list…

  16. Courtenay says:

I've had about a dozen tech/SM scene people tell me that “Mr Social” is in fact a fake account set up as a Twitter experiment… has anyone met him IRL? He has no website or blog listed.

  17. Amit Chowdhry (Pulse2.com) says:

Interesting! I actually totally got fooled if that is the case. Once that is verified, I'm replacing Mr. Social's ranking and adding yours Courtenay.

  18. Courtenay says:

    Haha, thanks! :)

    -@courtenaybird

  19. Al Ferretti says:

It's truly both a privilege and an honor to be on your list.
Do I owe you anything? :-)

    Thanks a bunch~
    -Al

  20. Amit Chowdhry (Pulse2.com) says:

And here we go. Another pointless Social Media expert list. A few questions:

    1. Can you please define what a “social media expert” is, so we can understand what this list is actually supposed to be about?
    2. What criteria did you use to determine who these “experts” were? Not to single anyone out, but #48, for example: Carina K. Lovely girl and I'm glad she's on Twitter, but what makes her a social media expert, let alone one of the top 100? Her 60,000+ followers or the 1,900+ tweets? Is she an expert because she teaches companies or individuals how to do stuff on Facebook or Twitter? Is she a community manager for a major brand? Did she publish a book on new media? Is she giving keynotes at business 2.0 and 3.0 conferences? You aren't telling me why Carina is an expert other than the fact that she has followers and about 2,000 tweets.

Or #68: Al Ferretti, which you describe thus:

“Al Ferretti is an internet marketer and self-proclaimed “Twitter and Social Networking Maven.” Ferretti sends out some very interesting news stories and responds very regularly to his followers. He has over 43,000 followers and sent out over 14,000 tweets.”

An internet marketer and SELF-PROCLAIMED “twitter and social networking maven?”

“He sends out interesting news stories and responds regularly to his followers?”

    “14,000 tweets?”

    …?!

Again, no offense to either Carina or Al – who are probably fine people and didn't ask to be included in this list – but… are you kidding? You've given us nothing with this. No criteria, no sensible method or purpose… I'm surprised you didn't include Oprah and Glenn Beck in the mix. They have lots of followers on Twitter too. I guess that makes them experts?

Incidentally, the description you threw together for Stephen Fry (#19) could have been a little better researched. The guy deserves better than “V impressed at first glance” and “solid and sexy.” How about – Stephen Fry brought Twitter into the mainstream in the UK and has since been one of social media's most active advocates and most influential voices. That might have been more appropriate – and relevant.

What about the team behind Best Buy's incredible social media program? Andy Sernovitz, whose Gaspedal and Social Media Business Council are doing more to advance social media for business than any organization on the planet? How about Trey Pennington, Scott Gould, Beth Harte, Mack Collier or Amber Naslund? Edelman's Michael Brito? Chess Media Group's Jacob Morgan? How about the hundreds of people doing real work to advance social media adoption, integration, management and measurement around the globe? People actually developing best practices? You know… experts?

I would much prefer to be positive about this and say “well done” or “fantastic list,” but… I really can't.

  23. Amit Chowdhry (Pulse2.com) says:

I appreciate the feedback Olivier, but in all honesty I was not looking to impress anyone with this list. The only purpose for this list was to highlight some of the most active users and give them recognition for their work. This is supposed to be a starting point for new Twitter users.

I joined Twitter to interact with people that I don't know. I had no idea who to follow in the beginning to get a lot of responses for my opinions or shared content. I am following each of these people on this list and have been engaged with a good number of them.

It appears that you have an interesting blog that you write also. I challenge you to write an extensive blog post of your own to highlight people that you think deserve it.

  26. @stuartflatt says:

Only just saw this list. But completely agree with Oliver. This is a list of twitter users, not 'social media experts'.

The only reason I came on here as someone said they were glad to be included in the list, and all they do is RT their own tripe all day. Yawn

My nan knows more about social media and she struggles to read a newspaper…

  27. Amit Chowdhry (Pulse2.com) says:

Despite your disagreement with this list, the difference between all of these people and every other self-proclaimed social media professional is that they have built a solid following and are highly influential. I still follow these 100 people in a separate group and are noticing that they share the most interesting content.

    Also… @LewisHowes!

  34. @VincentWright says:

I doubt seriously that anyone can come up with a "perfect" list of the top 100 social media experts on Twitter but, I , for one, do like the list you've put so much time into building. Should you decide to do another list, I'd propose you make it longer than 100 and I'd DEFINITELY propose that you consider adding Bill Austin to the list: http://twitter.com/WBAUSTIN

Bill is HIGHLY knowledgeable + HIGHLY HELPFUL + is following 109,548 + has 100,437 + is listed in 1,197
lists and has generated 62,065+ Tweets

I know of no one I'd rather see more on such a list than Bill Austin. (If you get a chance, you should get to know him..

    Thanks, and Keep STRONG, Amit!

  35. Elgin says:

    great list

It's a tiring job listing this but it's worth the effort

  36. Hirfan says:

Nice list but the list seems to be based on only the number of twitter followers and tweets, more other SME has to be pointed out on this list, thanks for sharing this huge list.

  37. Diana says:

    great list thankyou Amit

As you say anyone who disagrees is free to make their own list. i am sure all of us could find someone who is a good fit on that list and one has to start somewhere.

I follow a couple of them, particularly @Wayne Mansfield, who helped out with a fundraiser we did(and continue to do) for Pakistan. To me this is using your influence in a positive way and hopefully we will see more of the same in the future from other concerned twitterers.

Again I congratulate you on your efforts in researching this article

I agree that the findings of the study are not entirely a surprise. Similar studies have been conducted before and consistently show the same results in that many employers (including minority employers) show preference on racial lines at all stages of the hiring process.Tissot Lady Classic Watches

Fortunately, such discrimination is already illegal; however, it is difficult to pinpoint violations because the law requires that an offense be intentional and demonstrable. In a 2002 study conducted by two professors from the University of Chicago and MIT that utilized racially indicative names (i.e. there was a "Brad" and a "Tyrone") submitted with resumes of equal qualification. The study recorded how many of the applicants received callbacks or interviews based on resumes where the only significant difference was in the name. In findings consistent with this new Princeton study, it showed that applicants with "white-sounding" names were 50% more likely to receive a call for an interview than those with "black-sounding" names. What's more interesting in the context of this new study involves the apparent lack of impact of the credentials of applicants on the stigma of being an ex-convict. To bolster the comparison between blacks and white ex-convicts offered by the Princeton article, the former study found that the positive impact of the(identical)credentials of those with "white-sounding" names was far greater than that of those with "black-sounding names" on the chances of getting an interview. Just an interesting comparison I thought was poignant to this topic.Tissot watch prices

It seems, however, that studies like this do little to address the issue of racial discrimination in hiring practices beyond shining a glimmer upon it every five years. Greater accountability of employers through rigorous audits of this kind with actual penalties for violations would perhaps be prudent.Tissot watches sale
