Bump Technologies has taken their popular iPhone application in which users exchange contact information simply by bumping phones and ported it over to the Android operating system. As the application launches on the Android today, a new version was just approved on the Apple App Store too.
The updated version has a feature called “Friend Compare” which looks at the address book of both phones and both of your Facebook profiles to see if you have mutual friends. When bumping each other’s phones, you can also automatically update your Facebook profile too. The Android version won’t have the Facebook integration yet, but it can be expected in future versions.
Bump has about $3 million in funding from Sequoia Capital. If you have used the Bump app, let us know what you think of it in the comments. Do you think it would do as well on the Android as it did on the iPhone?
Shares of 3Com Corporation (NASDAQ:COMS) rose more than 31% after financial traders applauded Hewlett Packard’s acquisition offer for $2.7 billion. The deal was announced late Wednesday night and indicates HP’s strategic direction in competing with Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO).
The $2.7 billion offer is a 39% premium offer on 3Com’s valuation based on the share price on Wednesday closing price of $5.69. The close of today’s share price was $7.46.
“We have a favorable view on this proposed acquisition,” stated J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz. The deal “provides an important building block to becoming a one-stop shop for IT convergence,” added Moskowitz in a report.
The news of the deal also caused 3Com competitor stock prices to drop such as Juniper Communications and Brocade Communications. Juniper’s stock price dropped 2.56% and Brocade Communications dropped 12.65%.
With all the tweets that are being sent out by the web, mobile devices, toilets, airplanes, and from outer space you would figure that at least a million were being sent out per day. Pingdom quantifies that exactly 27.3 million tweets are being sent out per day as of right now.
The sample dates for that average is between October 21 and November 11. There are fluctuations of between 567,000 and 1.8 million every hour depending on major events taking place. When extrapolating that average, it comes out to over 10 billion tweets per year. While this is a large number, Yahoo! members send out 100 billion e-mails per month according to TechCrunch.
In terms of communication preference, Twitter will not be able to replace e-mail but it can come darn close.
AT&T normally does not respond to advertising from competitors but in Verizon’s case they are making an exception. AT&T called Verizon’s ad “blatantly false and misleading” when talking about data coverage. AT&T pointed out the actual facts in a press release.
Some of the facts include:
- 233 million people, or 75% of the population in the U.S. is covered by AT&T’s 3G network
- 301 million people, or 96% of the population in the U.S. is covered by the EDGE network
- 303 million people is covered by AT&T’s GPRS network which covers talking, texting, and basic website access.
AT&T also decided to ruffle a few Verizon feathers by calling out the smartphone market. “Unlike Verizon, AT&T offers the most popular smartphones in the industry,” stated AT&T in the press release.
Verizon is doing to AT&T what Apple did to the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. Its about time AT&T fights back in order to convince their customers that the high price of having an iPhone is worth it.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is a new game that was developed by Infinity Ward and was published by Activision. Even before the trailer was released, there was a lot of hype about the release. All the hype paid off because the game earned $310 million in the first 24 hours that it was released. That dollar amount is just paid on sales in the United Kingdom and the United States.
The company sold 4.7 million copies of the game in 24 hours. This game beat the record of Grand Theft Auto: IV which sold 3.6 million copies on the first day. The game setting is based on a military conflict between Russia and the United States.
In the single player mode, the game player assumes the role of U.S. Army Ranger Private Joseph Allen and he helps Afghan city that has been taken over by militants. Allen ends up being killed by a Russian militant and is scapegoated for a massacre of civilians in Russia. Russia views this as a terrorist attack and attempts to invade the United States. This game is guaranteed to be an action-packed thrill ride. At least that’s what it looks like in the trailer.
Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NYSE:AMD) have come to an agreement. Intel will pay AMD $1.25 billion as part of the agreement. Previously AMD argued that Intel was using incentives for PC manufacturing companies to making exclusive deals with them. The litigation process started back in 2004.
AMD will be dropping their lawsuits in Delaware and two pending cases in Japan. They are also going to withdraw all regulatory complaints. However Intel isn’t completely off the hook yet. Government agencies could still bring a case against Intel. The European Union already fined Intel $1.45 billion this past May. Intel is appealing the fine from the European Union.
AMD and Intel have also made a cross-license agreement that will allow AMD to split into two companies. Globalfoundries is the other company that AMD has spun off. Globalfoundries does not have to worry about lawsuits from Intel either.
“Everybody is a winner here including Intel. They should be congratulated for trying to put this behind them and listen to everyone’s concerns as well as defend their rights,” stated AMD CEO Dirk Meyer in a conference call.
Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) software engineer Elvin Lee announced today that the company has dropped the price of 20GB storage between GMail and Picasa to $5 per year. Google currently gives 7.27GB of free storage for GMail and 1GB of free storage for Picasa. Before Google was offering 10GB of storage for $20 per year. For $20 per year now you can buy 80GB worth of storage. I’m highly considering the 80GB option because I have 27GB worth of photos and do not like the way that Facebook decreases the resolution quality when hosting my photos. Microsoft has just released a wireless N adapter for the Xbox 360. Now it is selling in stores for $99.99. As a matter of fact, GameStop has it in stock right now. The N adapter has two antennas and supports 802.11a/b/g/n too. The older wireless adapter model will probably be spun out of production and will only be available as used goods in the near future.
