China Unicom (Hong Kong) Limited (ADR) (NYSE:CHU) has sold about 100,000 iPhones since the device became available in the Asian country this past October. Shortly after the launch of the iPhone, China Unicom said that about 5,000 of them sold in the opening weekend.

In South Korea, the iPhone sold slightly better. In the opening weekend of the iPhone’s availability, KT had about 60,000 pre-orders for the device in South Korea. In total China has about 700 million mobile phone users.

China Unicom sells both the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3G S. However China Unicom removed WiFi from the iPhone as part of government regulation compliance. China Unicom is selling the 32GB iPhone with no contract for 6,999 yuan (a little over $1,000).

Square launched a little over a week ago and was valuated at $40 million. Square was created by Twitter co-founder and Chairman Jack Dorsey. Now Dorsey already has a competitor: VeriFone Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:PAY).

VeriFone is designing a hardware and software solution through the iPhone to accept credit card payments. The solution accepts physical credit cards. VeriFone’s solution will be called Payware Mobile.

“Banks and processors are concerned about the security issues of unapproved merchants using unregulated software and insecure fobs to accept card payments…PAYware Mobile leverages VeriFone’s proven payment and security expertise to provide the ultimate in end-to-end protection against payment fraud and misuse on an open and unregulated platform such as the iPhone,” stated VeriFone CEO Douglas Bergeron.

However VeriFone requires a merchant account. Square doesn’t. Square users already have an advantage because paying for a merchant account every month is not cheap.

About a week ago Friendster re-branded themselves and was rumored to be for sale. Malaysian company MOL Global has bought out Friendster.com, the social network a majority of us used before Facebook was introduced. Friendster’s biggest downfall was when they hit a scaling wall. Friendster really started slowing down at one point causing their users to move on to the next big thing faster than they expected. At least that is the reason why I switched.

The acquisition price was not disclosed, but it is rumored to have sold for about $100 million. The company raised about $45 million in funding since they started. Not a bad return for investors. Friendster launched in 2001. Below is the full press release.

AOL Closes Its First Day As An Independent

AOL INC. (NYSE:AOL) has finished their first day as an independent company. It actually makes me feel somewhat nostalgic that AOL is on their own again. I actually hope that the company starts mailing me CDs with a free AOL trial once again. Time Warner Inc. (NYSE:TWX) might actually start feeling separation anxiety eventually.

The separation has taken place about 10 years after the AOL-Time Warner merger took place. Both Time Warner and AOL still have a long road ahead. AOL has been suffering from a loss of advertising revenue and took a hit as broadband grew to be more popular than dial-up connections. And Time Warner has had to slim down on their cable business.

After AOL’s first day of trading the company stock ended at $23.67 and the company has a market cap of $2.54 billion.

Give a little kid an instrument, make them sing, and you have YouTube gold. In the below viral video, this Asian boy is playing a ukulele and is singing I’m Yours by Jason Mraz (pictured). To be honest, I think I like this kid’s version of the song better than the original Jason Mraz song.

Here are some of the best YouTube comments of the video:
