Facebook sent out a press release today asking all of their users to update and review their privacy settings. Users will be given options over what tools to use in order to control what information is being shared.
“Facebook is transforming the world’s ability to control its information online by empowering more than 350 million people to personalize the audience for each piece of content they share,” stated Facebook VP of Communications, Public Policy, and Marketing Elliot Schrage. “We’ve always designed Facebook to enable people to control what information they share with whom—it’s the reason our service continues to attract such a broad and diverse group of users from around the world. We’re proud of the latest evolution we’re announcing today and we will continue to innovate to serve users’ changing needs.”
Facebook will have a Publisher Privacy Control that adds a level of security for to photos, status updates, friends list, etc. Regional networks will be removed and will be replaced with four control settings — Friends, Friends of Friends, Everyone and Customized. I actually do not like the fact that regional networks are being removed. This feature helped me keep track of where my friends live.
Elizabeth Espinal is a woman that lives in New York and claims that she has been receiving some cryptic text messages from fast food restaurant Burger King (BK). She claimed BK kept texting her with spam advertisements even though she told them repeatedly to stop. Those text messages caused Espinal to be “subjected to aggravation.” This is why she is suing BK for $5 million.
Around April 2008, Espinal received a text from a number labeled 99143 and it said “Kick it up a notch with a loaded steakhouse burger. Try one today at BK.” She kept receiving messages like this for at least several more months. Another one said “Stop by BK for a refreshing Mocha BK Joe Iced Coffee. A perfect mix of rich coffee and chocolate syrup.” Finally she decided to file a lawsuit again BK in April 2009 claiming that the fast food restaurant chain violated the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. If she actually wins this case, it’ll be interesting what will happen to other text message marketers afterwards.
Want to know what the Jackson kids did over Thanksgiving? They gave us a first-hand look using a video from a digital camera and YouTube. Instead of having a traditional Thanksgiving meal, The Jackson kids were staying at a $25,000-per-night suite at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.
The video is filmed by Randy Jackson Jr. (son of Randy) Jermajesty Jackson (son of Jermaine) is the little kid with the black hoodie. Jaffar Jackson (son of Jermaine) is the kid with the white shirt. Donte (son of Randy) is also in the video. According to Randy’s Facebook page, the kid that is yelling in the background is Prince Michael “Blanket” Jackson II.
Dell Inc. (NASDAQ:DELL) has been using Twitter to drum up some customer attention to buy some of their computers. It looks like that it has been working for them quite nicely too. Through Twitter marketing itself, Dell made over $6.5 million. The number of tweets sent out by all of Dell’s Twitter accounts were about 1.5 million. Over 100 employees have been sending out tweets for the company according to Manish Mehta, VP of Dell’s online division.
Surely the $6.5 million is only a mere fraction of the company’s $61.1 billion in revenues, but the company sees social media as being a vibrant channel to communicate with customers.
“It’s a very vibrant channel for us and it’s growing aggressively,” stated Mehta in an interview. “It’s not just our reach and growth that has progressed, it’s that it’s happening globally.”
There’s nothing like a good video mash-up and auto-tune being mixed together. This video is actually pretty catchy which is why it has become a viral hit on YouTube. The video has quick clips of popular incidents that took place in 2009.
Some of the clips include balloon boy, Christian Bale flipping out, Jon Gosselin, Obama swatting a fly, Octomom, Lady Gaga, Kanye vs. Taylor, Sully, Meghan McCain on Twitter, John Mayer on Twitter, and Susan Boyle.
Michael Bay may look goofy, but he takes his movies and high-tech scenes seriously. In The Rock, he gave us a solid Ferrari vs. Hummer chase scene where Sean Connery is being chased by Nicholas Cage. In Bad Boys 2, he gave us Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in Ferrari chasing after Rastafarians dropping cars from a high speed moving truck at them. In The Transformers movie, he made a Bumblebee Transformer fight a Barricade Transformer in order to protect Megan and Shia. Bay is heavily criticized for his emphasis on destruction scenes, but he wins at the box office every time. What’s Bay up to now? Victoria’s Secret commercials.
Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) launched a bunch of cool stuff today. First they launched Google Chrome for the Mac. And yup, it is now my default browser over Firefox. There are still a few kinks in Google Chrome for the Mac. For example, I tried importing my bookmarks from Firefox to Chrome a couple of times and it crashed each time. So I just added them manually.
As soon as Google Chrome for the Mac is installed, the homepage is set to the thumbnails of often visited websites and the Google Chrome Theme gallery. The Google Chrome Theme gallery makes it very easy to change the theme using one click. Google also recently launched Chrome for Linux.
For PC Windows users, Google Chrome created a feature called Extensions. Extensions are very similar to the Add-Ons within Mozilla Firefox. Some of the Extensions include Picnik, Remember The Milk (ChromeMilk), Google Reader, Woot, NPR, etc.
