Last night Twitter surpassed 6.8 billion tweets around midnight or 1AM EST.  Now the microblogging service is just inching close towards 7 billion total tweets.  GigaTweet tracks every tweet that is sent out and adds it to a total count.  This means that last night the number of tweets has surpassed the total population.  Currently the world population is about 6.7 billion.

Just to have a little more fun with numbers, Twitter is valued at about $1 billion based on venture capital investment. That means each tweet is worth about $0.14 based on today’s statistics.

While Twitter has to deal with serving about 1.6 million tweets per day, Facebook has to deal with over 300,000 photos being uploaded per second.  And YouTube has to deal with 20 hours of video being added every minute.  Twitter has come a long way from being known as the fail whale company to serving tons of tweets every day.

Mazda Motor Corporation has not dabbled much in hybrid technologies.  The Japanese automotive company was interested more in start-stop systems and lighter materials.  Now Mazda and Toyota have formed a partnership on hybrid technology.  Toyota will supply the technology and components to Mazda for hybrid vehicles.  The Toyota and Mazda partnership will result in a hybrid vehicle in 2013.

The control system, motor, and main components that are used in the Toyota Prius will be supplied for a Mazda vehicle.  Mazda plans to sell tens of thousands of hybrid cars.  A hybrid Mazda3 will be the first vehicle to come out of the partnership.  Mazda plans to spend about 98 billion yen ($1.2 billion) on research and development in 2010.  Toyota will be spending about 800 billion yen ($9.9 billion) during the same time period on research and development.

Earlier this month Ford Motor Company announced that they will be investing $500 million in hybrid vehicles.  General Motors will be investing $336 million in a new Michigan facility to build Chevy Volt electric cars.

Milwaukee Bucks point guard basketball player Brandon Jennings was one of the best basketball players at Oak Hill Academy in Virginia. After graduating high school, he played professional basketball for Lottomatica Roma in Italy. After playing for a year in Italy, Jennings was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2009 NBA Draft. Jennings was recently fined for tweeting (posting a status message on Twitter.com) about a basketball game about 15 minutes after it ended.

According to National Basketball Association (NBA) policy, players are not allowed to tweet until after the media is finished discussing the game. Jennings was charged $7,500 as a result of the tweet he sent out after the game. Jennings tweeted “Back to 500. Yess!!! ‘500? means where doing good. Way to Play Hard Guys” shortly after the game.

Currently Jennings has about 13,659 followers on Twitter and sent out about a total of 965 tweets. His user name is YUNGBUCK3. Jennings sent out several tweets after being fined in response.  He wrote, “I understand I got fined, but 7500?  For being happy over a win, you would of thought I said something bad.  I mean it was a big win for us.”

Jennings isn’t the only one who was fined for tweeting by the NBA.  Dallas Mavericks owner and Internet entrepreneur Mark Cuban was fined $25,000 for criticizing NBA referees on Twitter this past March.
