Twitter has acquired Cloudhopper, an SMS and MMS software startup. Twitter plans to scale their SMS division as the company sends out about 1 billion tweets per month, many of them being from mobile devices.

“To help us further grow and scale our SMS service, we are happy to announce the acquisition of Cloudhopper, a messaging infrastructure company that enables Twitter to connect directly to mobile carrier networks in countries all over the planet. Please join us in welcoming both Joe and Kristin to Twitter’s mobile team,” stated Kevin Thau, Twitter’s representative for mobile products and partnerships.

Cloudhopper was founded by Joe Lauer in 2008. Lauer has several patents and graduated from the University of Michigan Engineering.
