Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) is taking on Amazon.com’s S3 services on directly. Google has launched a new service called Google Storage for Developers. Google Storage for Developers is highly scalable, offers high-bandwidth storage, and has an RESTful API to make uploading/downloading content simple.

Google Storage costs 17 cents per gigabyte per month. Uploads cost 17 cents per gigabyte and 15-30 cents per gigabyte per month for downloads. Google Storage is only available to a limited number of people in the U.S. for free, assuming 100GB of storage and 300GB of bandwidth per month.

Amazon.com replied to Google’s new service by reducing the price of S3. Now Amazon.com’s Reduced Reliability storage has a 99.99% reliability for 10 cents per gigabyte. The normal price was 15 cents. [Ars Technica]
