Aliso Viejo, California based online retail company Buy.com has been sold to Japanese company Ratuken for $250 million. The deal will be handled by Boston-based Ratuken subsidiary Ratuken USA. Ratuken Japan has about 64 million users and Buy.com has about 14 million customers. [TechCrunch]

Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) has announced the WebM media format at the Google I/O conference. WebM is an open-source and free web standard that competes with the H.264 format. The H.264 video format is partially owned by both Microsoft and Apple.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has reversed its policy on not accepting cash for iPads. Diane Campbell was surprised when she went to the Apple store and they did not allow her to pay for it with cash, so she did some prodding. Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) has announced that they are launching an online Chrome web app store. Some of the apps that will be available right away upon launch includes Pandora, Digg, Lego Star Wars, Tweetdeck, LinkedIn, Plants vs. Zombies, NPR, Bejeweled 2, and Scrabble. The Dark Room image editing software will cost $4.99. The Sports Illustrated web app will have embedded video and will be fully searchable. [Engadget]

Not only has Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) announced an Apple iTunes and an Amazon.com S3 competitor this past week, they are now challenging Apple TV too. Google’s new product will be called Google TV as announced at the Google I/O conference.

Facebook is one of the biggest influences on a girl’s life according to a survey conducted by National Family Week. A study was conducted on girls that are 8-15 years old. About 40% of the girls in the survey said that Facebook is one of the most important things in their lives.

QVC announced plans to launch applications for the Android and BlackBerry application stores through the “QVC Everywhere” service. QVC will also be launching an enhanced version of the QVC iPhone application.
