Hotmail.com, the Microsoft-powered e-mail service that you used to use before GMail came around has added several new features to the service. Below is a few bullet points about what is new.

Starbucks is giving back to the Foursquare community. On top of the Barista badge that is awarded to users who frequent Starbucks in multiple cities, the coffee company is now awarding those that become “mayors.” Mayors is a title earned by Foursquare users that frequent a venue at a specific location the most out of any other user.

The most popular music identification service Shazam has hit 1 billion song recognitions. These recognitions were made through 75 million of Shazam’s users. Shazam CEO Andrew Fisher predicts that they will hit 100 million users by the end of the year.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has settled with VirnetX Holding Corporation on a patent dispute. Microsoft will pay VirnetX $200 million to license VPN technology from them.

Amazon.com has announced that the Kindle app for Google Android will be coming soon. The Kindle application is already available on BlackBerry, iPhone, and iPad. Currently there are roughly 500,000 e-books available for download on the Kindle store.

Improv Everywhere is a New York based comedy group that knows how to make some very viral videos. This video is the latest one that they have made in order to protest the New York Public Library budget cut of $37 million. In this video they decided to do a parody of the Ghostbusters. SaaS firm Cloud9 Analytics has raised $8 million in Series C. This round of investment was led by Mayfield Fund. InterWest Partners and Leapfrog Ventures also participated. Rajeev Batra of Mayfield will be joining the board of directors as a result of the funding. Full press release below:
