Pat Trueman, the former Chief of the U.S. Department of Justice Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section said that ICANN’s decision on .xxx domain names was “foolish and unnecessary.” Trueman also worked with Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush at the Justice Department. ICANN approved the .xxx top level domain name for websites related to pornography.

“They seem to be caught up in process rather than need,” said Trueman. “They had a non-binding ruling against them saying they didn’t follow their process. It was not binding that they change their position [on .xxx].”

Trueman said that the .xxx domain name will end up making pornography more available to children. And apparently filters won’t work either. Only about 20% of families use Internet filters.

“So what is the point?” said Trueman. “The pornographers didn’t want it. The people who want to protected children and others from internet porn didn’t want it. The only people who want it is ICM Registry, who will make money.”
