Dell Ending Windows XP Option

Dell Inc. (NASDAQ:DELL) is ending the operating system Windows XP as an option starting at the beginning of this month. This is Dell’s way of working with Microsoft to phase out the older operating system. Microsoft said this past June that they will be preventing OEMs from pre-installing Windows XP on October 22. Customers will still have multiple options of buying XP though.

“Per Microsoft guidelines regarding Windows XP, system vendors like Dell will no longer be able to ship systems with XP Professional and XP Home after October 22, 2010,” stated Dell in a blog post. “This means that we will stop offering XP as an option for customers starting this month in preparation for next month’s deadline. One other important thing to note is that Dell plans to continue Windows XP driver support until December 2012.”

Customers will still be able to buy a copy of Windows XP and hand-install it on their computers. Microsoft will extend this right through the Windows 7 operating system life-cycle.
