Diaspora has written a blog post that showcases what the user interface looks like for their open-source social-network. Back when Diaspora first discussed their goals, they were calling themselves a Facebook competitor. The company received some press from The New York Times and raised $200,000 in crowd-sourced funding.

Diaspora is not ready to be released to the public yet, but developers can download a release of their code now. Diaspora looks very empty right now, but the user interface looks “clean” that way.

Features that currently exist include:
- Share status messages and photos privately in nearly in real-time with friends.
- Friend people across the Internet
- Manage friends using “aspects”
- Photo and album uploads
- Traffic is signed and encrypted

The public alpha of the project is expected to arrive in October.
