Facebook Not Building A Phone, But Focusing On Deeper Mobile Integration

Earlier today TechCrunch reported that Facebook is building a mobile phone “or rather, they’re building the software for the phone and working with a third party to actually build the hardware.” I think the latter is true because starting a mobile device manufacturing division seems like a business that would not make sense for Facebook.

TechCrunch also mentioned that Facebook wants to integrate their service deeply into the contacts list and the core functions of the phone by controlling the operating system. Joe Hewitt and Matthew Papakipos are both working on the project. Hewitt helped build Firefox and created Parakey, a web-based operating system before joining Facebook. Papakipos lead the Google Chrome OS project up until June.

A Facebook spokesperson told Mashable that “Facebook is not building a phone,” but they are focusing on “deep integration” with existing mobile platforms.
