I was just notified by Verizon Wireless about a program that they are spearheading called the Verizon Wireless HopeLine program. Verizon is collecting no-longed used wireless phone devices and equipment in any condition from any service provider. The material from the phones will either be recycled or will be refurbished into future devices.

With the funds that Verizon makes from the sales of refurbished phones, they will donate wireless phones and airtime to victims of domestic violence. Verizon also will be collecting rechargeable batteries for recycling.

Phones can be donated by mail (postage paid), in Verizon Communications Stores, or at special events taking place throughout the year.

Verizon gives customers access to the National Domestic Violence Hotline by dialing #HOPE (#4673). People can receive confidential help by dialing the above number. The call is toll and airtime is free.

Current HopeLine partners include:
- Family Violence Prevention Fund
- National Coalition Against Domestic Violence
- The Corporate Alliance to End Partner Violence
- Resource for Women & Their Families, Inc. Break the Cycle
- Casa de Esperanza
- Safe Horizon
- Prevent Child Abuse America
- The Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League
- National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives

Below are some statistics about the program:
- Collected more than 7 million phones
- Awarded $7.9 million+ in cash grants to domestic violence agencies
- Distributed over 90,000 phones with over 300 million minutes of free wireless service used by victims of domestic violence
- Properly disposed of 1.6 million no-longer used mobile phones
- Kept over 200 tons of electronic waste and batteries out of landfills
