Domain name Sex.com has been sold for $13 million. The domain went for auction on July 2010 after owner Escom LLC went bankrupt. Clover Holdings, a company in the Caribbeans put in the highest bid. At one point Sex.com was owned by a conman that stole it from the original owner. The transaction will go through if the judge in a bankruptcy court approves it.
The $13 million was one of the highest ever paid amounts for a domain. In 2006 Escom bought Sex.com for close to $14 million. The original owner of Sex.com was Gary Kremen, the owner of Match.com. He sold it in 2006. Kremen first registered the domain name in 1994, but lost control of it in 1996 to Stephen Cohen. Then he had a long legal battle to prove he was the owner. Cohen was fined $65 million.
