Microsoft Acquires 3-D Sensing Technology Company Canesta

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has made a definitive agreement to acquire Canesta, Inc. Canesta will transfer their products, technology, I.P., customer contracts, and other resources to Microsoft. Canesta makes 3-D sensing technology for developing Natural User Interfaces (NUI).

“This is very exciting news for the industry. There is little question that within the next decade we will see natural user interfaces become common for input across all devices. With Microsoft’s breadth of scope from enterprise to consumer products, market presence, and commitment to NUI, we are confident that our technology will see wide adoption across many applications that embody the full potential of the technology,” stated Canesta president and CEO Jim Spare.

Canesta has 44 patents and dozens more being filed. One of the patents include CMOS 3-D sensing pixels and signal processing algorithms.
