One of the most popular uses of Twitter is to report emergency situations. This included the plane landing in the Hudson River and fires in Los Angeles. The Indonesian presidential advisor for social welfare Andi Arief uses Twitter often to report earthquakes, floods, and tsunamis hitting the country. Arief’s Twitter account was hacked and sent out a status that said “Besok jakarta tsunami [translates to "Jakarta tsunami tomorrow].”
It is rather unfortunate that his account was hacked and it was even more unfortunate that it reported a fake disaster. It took Arief several hours to get control of his Twitter account going again. One of the reasons why Arief’s account may have gotten hacked is due to a weak password.
