Senator Joe Lieberman Introduces SHIELD Act To Make Classified Information Releases Illegal
Senator Joe Lieberman, the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, has introduced new legislation that would make the publication of any classified intelligence source illegal. The proposed legislation is known as the Securing Human Intelligence and Enforcing Law Dissemination (SHIELD) Act,
“The recent dissemination by Wikileaks of thousands of State Department cables and other documents is just the latest example of how our national security interests, the interests of our allies, and the safety of government employees and countless other individuals are jeopardized by the illegal release of classified and sensitive information,” stated Lieberman. “This legislation will help hold people criminally accountable who endanger these sources of information that are vital to protecting our national security interests.”
The SHIELD Act would have a section in the Espionage Act amended that already forbid the publishing of classified information through wiretapping. This Act is aimed directly at publishers. The SHIELD Act is being co-sponsored by senators John Ensign (R-NV) and Scott Brown (R-MA).
