How Receiving Clerk Marque Gumbs Stole About $3.8 Million From Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
Marque Gumbs was a receiving clerk at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Gumbs was paid $37,000 per year in salary. But he was able to embezzle $3.8 million using an interesting scheme.
Whenever the Cancer Center needed new toner cartridges, he ordered them from Office Depot. He was responsible for installing the new toner cartridges in the Center. While he was employed at the Cancer Center, he had order $3.8 million in unnecessary and incompatible cartridges during the last 6 years that never made it to the hospital.
Before one of his special deliveries, he would tell the Office Depot delivery driver to meet him on the street instead of the usual receiving area. Then he would sell printer toners in bulk. Between October 2009 and August 2010, he order $1.2 million in toner that the hospital didn’t need and used the money from that to buy a 2011 BMW X6 and a one-bedroom apartment at the Trump Plaza high rise. He bought the car in full for $50,000.
Gumbs was caught by surveillance video of him intercepting the printer toner cartridges and taking it to his car in the hospital garage. He is being held on a grand larceny charge of $1 million. Congratulations on stealing from cancer patients, Gumbs. You must be very pleased with yourself. I’m putting you in the Hall of Shame.
