In December 2009 Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSA) made a deal to acquire NBC from General Electric. This deal is facing scrutiny from the government. The FCC said that one of the proposed conditions if they allow the deal to take place is that NBC would no longer have the exclusive rights to their shows on the Internet. This means that Hulu would not be the only web video service that has the rights to stream NBC shows. The three owners in Hulu are NBC, ABC, and FOX. [AllThingsD]
Logitech has told Gigabyte Technology to temporarily suspend shipments of the Revue device that streams Google TV. Logitech told Gigabyte to suspend the shipments until January 2011 so that Google TV will have time to update their software. According to DigiTimes, “Market watchers had originally estimated that shipments of Revue STBs would top 500,000 units by the end of 2010, and including STBs shipped by Sony, sales of Google TVs were expected to top one million units initially.” [DigiTimes]
Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) now has hundreds of employees working on a local business project that directly competes with Groupon. As you may remember, Google failed to make an acquisition deal with Groupon because of a breaking fee. The rumor is that Groupon wanted a $1 billion break-up fee from Google if the deal was blocked by the government.
VoIP service Skype is going to get video calling on the iPhone very soon according to an internal document that was floating around. What happens when you steal a Apple PowerMac G4 from a hacker? Embarrassment. Melvin Guzman stole a laptop computer from a hacker that goes by the alias Zoz. Zoz was able to find out all of Melvin’s personal information since he had VNC and a keylogger installed on the machine. Zoz told the story at the DEF CON conference. Sony and Toshiba have made an $835 million agreement. Sony will be buying back a chip fabrication facility from Toshiba that is being operated by Nagasaki Semiconductor Manufacturing. This is a pretty good deal considering that Sony sold the plant for slightly over $1 billion in 2008. The transfer is expected to take place in the fiscal year March 2012.
