Twitter Hits A New Record

On January 1st around 4 seconds after midnight in Japan, Twitter users hit an all-time record of the number of tweets sent out per second (TPS) according to Twitter’s TPS reports. Many of those tweets were “Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu” (“Happy New Year” in Japanese).

This record doubles Twitter’s last record of 3,283 tweets per second after Japan beat Denmark in last summer’s World Cup. When the clock hit midnight on New Year’s Eve in 2011, the East Coast in the U.S. hit 3,000 tweets per second.
