Verizon Communications and MetroPCS are teaming up to sue the Federal Communications Commission. MetroPCS and Verizon believes that the FCC has no right to regulate broadband. The two telecommunication companies also point out that the FCC exceeded their authority by preventing Comcast from throttling BitTorrent bandwidth.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has hired David Rice, a security expert, as the company global head of security. The hire has not been confirmed by Apple or or Rice as of yet. As of right now, Rice’s LinkedIn says that he is the Consulting Director for Policy Reform at U.S. Cyber Consequences Unit. InformationWeek sources say that Rice is “expected to start at Apple in March.”
Vidyo is a video conferencing company that has raised $11.5 million in funding. The company now has a total of $73.5 million and they raised $25 million less than a year ago. Vidyo lets multiple people talk in one video conference with HD quality through IP networks. Vidyo also lets you use the H.264 Scalable Video Coding (SVC) standard. Vidyo powers video for Google Chat and licenses its technology to HP, Intel, and Hitachi. Vidyo CEO Ofer Shapiro said that the company is adding its video technology to the iPad and iPhone. Menlo Ventures, Sevin Rosen Funds, Star Ventures, Four Rivers Group, and Rho Capital Ventures participated in this round of funding.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against two companies called S3 Graphics Inc. S3 Graphics is a Cayman Islands Corporation and there is another S3 Graphics Inc. company registered in Delaware. Apple filed the lawsuit at the Northern District of California. The summons letter was dated on January 13, 2011. The patent in question is not yet known. S3 is headquartered in Fremont, California.
Vook is a digital publisher company that has raised $5.25 million in Series A funding from VantagePoint Venture Partners and Floodgate. Vook publishes iPad, iPhone, Android book apps, and multimedia Kindle books. Vook has partnerships with Deepak Chopra, Seth Godin, and Tom Peters. Vook was founded in 2008 by Bradley Inman. Vook has raised $2.5 million in seed funding from Ron Conway, Baseline Ventures, Founder Collective, Maples Investments, and Lerer Ventures.
AOL is preparing to launch a digital iPad magazine called “Editions,” which will most likely be different from the News Corp. digital magazine known as The Daily. The Editions motto is: “The Magazine That Reads You.” The Editions app will be very similar to Flipboard. Editions will find content that you like based on your interests. FanBridge is a relationship management service commonly used by musicians, athletes, celebrities, etc. FanBridge has raised $2 million in Series A funding and has acquired Facebook fan management company Damntheradio. Angel investors Jeff Clavier, Chris Sacca, and Dave McClure provided FanBridge with $350,000 in seed capital around March 2009.
Rumor has is that AOL is in talks to acquire local news aggregation company Outside.in. The talks may fall apart since it is in early stages according to BusinessInsider. Steven Johnson founded Outside.in in 2006. Investors in Outside.in include Union Square Ventures, Marc Andreessen, John Borthwick, Esther Dyson, and CNN. If AOL does end up acquiring Outside.in, it is likely that they will roll the technology into Patch.com.
