Apple Makes Half Of Mobile Phone Profits, Despite Only 4% Market Share


According to a report by Horace Dediu of Symbo, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has a 4.2% global mobile phone market share but they account for 51% of the industry’s total profits. Apple continues to dominate profits in the mobile phone market from the top 8 mobile phone vendors in the December quarter. Apple sold 16.24 million iPhones in the first quarter of fiscal 2011, which resulted in $10.5 billion of company revenues. Not bad considering that Apple’s profit was 32% in August 2009.

Google Android Tablet Market Share Increases To 22%


Market share of the Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android tablet market share has increased. In the last quarter Apple’s tablet market share dropped from 95% to 77%. Android went from a 2.3% market share to 22%. Apple had reported 7.3 million iPads in the December quarter and Android shipments went from 100,000 to 2.1 million. In November, the Galaxy Tab had hit 600,000 in the first month.

Samsung Exec Says That Galaxy Tab Sales Are “Quite Small”


Despite earlier reports that Samsung had sold 2 million Tab tablets, the numbers are actually quite different. During Samsung’s quarterly earnings call this past Friday, a Samsung exec revealed that these numbers don’t represent sales to consumers. It is only units shipped to wireless companies and retailers across the globe.

Netgear CEO Patrick Lo Criticizes Apple and Microsoft


The chairman and CEO of Netgear did an interview recently where he heavily criticized Apple and Microsoft. Lo said that Apple’s closed model had only worked because “they own the market” for MP3 players. Lo said that this is only temporary. “Once Steve Jobs goes away, which is probably not far away, then Apple will have to make a strategic decision on whether to open up the platform,” stated Lo. “Ultimately a closed system just can’t go that far … If they continue to close it and let Android continue to creep up then it’s pretty difficult as I see it.”

Google Android Becomes World’s Leading Smart Phone Platform [REPORT]


Market research firm Canalys has announced that the Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android operating system has become the world’s leading smart phone platform. Shipments of the Android surpassed 32.9 million. Nokia was right behind them with 31 million. Nokia retained the position as the leading global smart phone vendor with a 28% market share. Worldwide about 101.2 million smartphones were shipped in the fourth quarter. The U.S. was the largest country market in terms of the number of shipments. RIM took first place from Apple again as the BlackBerry Torch was a popular device. HTC was in third place in the U.S. for the third quarter in a row. [Canalys]

Yuri Milner Launches Start Fund, Giving Every Y Combinator Company $150,000


Venture capitalists Yuri Milner of DST and Ron Conway of SV Angel have launched a new fund called The Start Fund. The first order of business is to invest $150,000 in every Y Combinator start-up company. The $150,000 investment will be convertible debt with no cap and discount.

Amazon.com Rumored To Launch Unlimited Video Streaming Option For Prime Subscribers


Prime subscriber customers of Amazon.com’s video on demand section will soon have unlimited streaming. To become a prime subscriber, it costs $79 per year. The Prime membership will include “unlimited, commercial-free, instant streaming of 5,000 movies and TV shows” according to the screenshot above.
