General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) is withdrawing a loan application today from the U.S. Department of Energy. The application was asking for $14.4 billion in direct loans from the Energy department. The government created a loan program called the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program where $25 billion was available in direct DoE loans for companies that were revamping their factories to help improve fuel economy.
Skype is now charging for group chat at a cost of $4.99 per day or $8.99 per month said the company in a blog post. The company also recently announced a new version of Skype for Mac and they removed the beta label. The group video calling is now part of the Premium package and will have the aforementioned costs. New users will receive a free 7 day trial of group chat.
Trimble has released a new rugged computer called the Ranger 3. This outdoor computer is intended for those that work in harsh work conditions like construction and forestry. The VGA display was designed in a way that makes it easy to read outdoors. The operating system on the computer is Windows Mobile 6.5 Pro and it meets the military specifications for ruggedness with an IP67 rating. The Ranger 3 also has a GPS, 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, 8GB of flash memory, Cortex-A8 processor, 5 megapixel camera, and 1D laser barcode scanner. The device will be available next month.
A British soldier that is stationed in Afghanistan had accidentally proposed to his girlfriend on the wrong answering machine. Towards the end of the 90-second message he said “Don’t ever forget I love you, I love you so much, I love you with all my heart and I was going to ask you, don’t answer, obviously you can’t answer, but will you marry me?” He accidentally left the message on the answering machine of 44 year old Diane Potts. Now the media is on the hunt for Samantha so they can get the message to the right person.
Samsung is going to quadruple their shipment of mobile processor chips to Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL). Apple was receiving about 5,000 application processor sheets per month from Samsung and now they will be getting 20,000. This means that about 50% of Samsung’s application processors will be given to Apple, meaning that Samsung is giving more to them than their own mobile division. The application processor is to the mobile phone as the CPU is to a PC. Samsung is building a $3.6 billion chip processing factory in Austin, TX, where a lot of the work there will be sold to Apple.
Mustafa Fteja is a New York resident that is suing Facebook for $500,000. He claims that Facebook inexplicably disable his account without warnings. Mustafa, 39, said that he used Facebook to stay in touch with people as he had about 340 friends there. “You call, they don’t answer the phone. You write, they don’t reply,” said Mustafa. That is why he was left with no choice but to take them to court. “I’m not doing this for money. I’m doing this for justice.”
A couple of days ago the volcano Mount Shinmoedake in Japan was erupting. Smoke and ash spewed from the volcano as high as 10,000 feet in the air. Some amateur photographers captured some of the footage and uploaded it to YouTube. Check it out in the video above.
