Khan Academy Builds BitTorrent App To Spread Education

The Khan Academy was started by an entrepreneur named Salman Khan. The Khan Academy was initially known for uploading simple math lessons through over 2,000 videos on YouTube. The Khan Academy received $2 million from Google as a donation this past September. Students can earn virtual badges as they progress with lessons. Teachers at the Khan Academy will even intervene when a student is stuck.

Sony Corporation has revealed the Xperia Play, also known as the “Playstation phone” at the Mobile World Congress conference. The phone is debuting in the early spring and is heading to Verizon. Over 20 publishers are working on games for the device. The PlayStation 1 game Ridge Racer will come with the device. Other games making its way to the phone include Assassin’s Creed, FIFA, Dead Space, Guitar Hero, and FIFA. The Xperia Play will be available in black and white, has a 5.1-megapixel camera, 400MB of in-phone memory, 8GB microSD memory card, Android 2.3 support, and 5.5 hours of battery life. [Forbes]

Echostar To Acquire Hughes Communications For $1.3 Billion

EchoStar Corporation (NASDAQ:SATS) is acquiring satellite Internet company Hughes Communications Inc. (NASDAQ:HUGH) for $1.3 billion. EchoStar is paying $60.70 per share in cash, a 1.7% discount to the Friday closing price of Hughes stock, but is 31% higher than the share price on January 19th. Private equity firm Apollo Global Management owns a majority of Hughes shares and has agreed to the deal. [NYT]

Cooliris is a multimedia browser plugin that lets you view photo and video content on the web in an appealing way. The company has raised $9.6 million in Series C financing from investors such as Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Deutsche Telekom subsidiary T-Venture, DAG Ventures, and The Westley Group. Cooliris has raised a total of $27.6 million in funding. Cooliris plans on using the new round of funding for strategic partnerships and product innovation. [TechCrunch]

Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:MMI) has announced that they are acquiring 3LM Inc. 3LM was founded by two former Google employees and they developed software to boost security on mobile devices powered by Android. 3LM had already signed deals to provide technology to several other device companies and those deals are expected to be announced soon. Accel Partners and several other small investors put $1.5 million in funding in 3LM. 3LM stands for “three laws of mobility.” 3LM technology is expected to enhance security features in Motorola.
