Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) is planning to test mobile payment services across stores in New York and San Francisco within the next 4 months. Several of Google’s Android devices will be able to ring up purchases at the retail stores. Google will be paying for the installation of the cash register systems developed by VeriFone Systems. This technology is known as near-field communications (NFC).
NFC lets customers pay for products at stores simply by tapping the device against the register at checkout. This essentially replaces cash and physical credit cards. The Samsung Nexus S is one of the phones developed to support NFC.
