Recently a friend of mine asked me if I knew how to cancel a pending friend request that they sent. I decided to do a little bit of experimenting and I have found the answer. Here is how to cancel a friend request on Facebook in 3 easy steps:
1. After logging in to the Facebook homepage, click on the Account drop-down menu at the top right and select “Privacy Settings.” At the bottom, you will see an option called “Block Lists” where it gives you the option to Edit the list.
2. Click on Edit your lists and type the name or e-mail address of the person you want to cancel the friend request for. Block that specific person.
3. Unblock the user again and this will cancel the pending friend request.

Seems like a roundabout way to do it. Here's an alternative.
1. Click the person's name to go to his or her profile.
2. Click "Respond to Friend Request" (hard to miss)
3. Click "Not now"
5. Reload the page. Click "Respond to Friend Request" again.
6. Click "Delete Request".
Facebook has deliberately made it this hard to cancel a request.

Uhhh, if you scroll down to the bottom of the profile of the person you want to retract the friend request from there is a Cancel friend request link on the left hand side by the block and report user links..
