Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has dropped their attempt to get a trademark on the word “Pod.” Now competitors can feel free to use that word in their names and brands. They filed a trademark for the word on July 29, 2004 with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office.

Apple actually abandoned their efforts in December of last year, tried again in January, and then finally gave up again. During the trademark process, Apple stopped other companies from using “Pod” in their company names. One company they prevented from using the word is currently known as Gear4, but they were known as PodGear until early in 2006.
