Social networking company Tagged.com has acquired dotSyntax. dotSyntax is best known for developing the Digsby instant messaging service. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. All seven of dotSyntax’s employees will be joining Tagged.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has invested $75 million into Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX). SpaceX is led by CEO Elon Musk. NASA is investing in SpaceX as part of the Commercial Crew Development (CCDev2) effort. NASA’s CCDev2 effort is to accelerate the availability of space transportation to their crew as they get prepare to retire the Space Shuttle. [socaltech]
Sony MASTERWORKS has signed the band 2CELLOS. The two 24 year old music students Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser currently live in a small town in Croatia. After their “Smooth Criminal” video surpassed 5 million views on YouTube, Sony decided to sign them. The two even got a phone call from Elton John, who had invited them on his European tour this summer. The two will be appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres show on April 25th too.
SAY Media has acquired Dogster Media, the company that runs Dogster.com and Catster.com. Dogster is a social network for dog owners to create a profile for their pet. Catster is the same concept for cats. Dogster receives about 2 million unique visitors per month.
Kobo is an e-book company that has raised $50 million in funding to compete with Google Android tablets, Apple iPads, and Amazon Kindle tablets. Kobo is based in Toronto and is barely over a year old. This round was led by a leading institutional investor. Existing investors include Indigo Books & Music and Cheung Kong Holdings. These two investors put in $13 million.
When Eric Schmidt was CEO of Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG), he was getting a $1 salary per year. This is the same salary that Larry Page and Sergey Brin received. Now Schmidt’s salary has been bumped up to $1.25 million per year as the Chairman of Google. He will also be able to receive a bonus of over 400% to a maximum of $6 million. Schmidt also owns a large percentage of Google’s shares and he sold over $300 million worth. Samsung Electronics has signed a $1.375 billion deal with Seagate. The two companies are calling it a “strategic alignment.” Samsung will be combining its hard disk drive operations division with Seagate. Samsung will receive equity in Seagate and the two companies will have a cross-license patent agreement.
