Nokia Using ST-Ericsson Chips For Windows Phone 8 Smartphones

When Nokia releases smartphones powered by the Windows Phone 8 operating system, they will use silicon from ST-Ericsson according to STMicroelectronics CEO Carlo Bozotti. Windows Phone devices currently use chips from Qualcomm. ST-Ericsson is a joint venture between STMicroelectronics and Ericsson.

The first ST-Ericsson chipset will be used in a Nokia Windows Phone is the U8500. The U8500 is a dual-core system-on-a-chop that compares to the Qualcomm Snapdragon line of chipsets. ST-Ericsson is investing $1 billion in R&D in areas like 4G/LTE chips.
