Marshall Zhang is an 11th grade student that received first place on Tuesday May 10th at the 2011 Sanofi-Aventis BioTalent Challenge. The Challenge is a content where students conduct research projects with mentor help. Zhang used a supercomputer to discover a potential treatment of the genetic disorder cystic fibrosis.

Datameer is an analytics startup solutions company that was built on Apache Hadoop. Datameer has raised $9.25 million led by Kleiner Perkins with participation from Redpoint Ventures. Kleiner Perkins partner Ellen Pao will be joining the Datameer board of directors. Now Datameer has raised a total of $12 million.

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals denied Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss’ request for rehearing their high-profile lawsuit against Facebook and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Howard Rice, the lawyer for the twins, said that they intend to petition the lawsuit to the U.S. Supreme Court. Rice, the Winklevoss twins, and Divya Narenda want to invalidate a previous multi-million settlement due to suspicion for not receiving the true valuation of the social networking company at the time of the settlement. Shavlik Technologies provides companies SaaS-based solutions. Shavlik also provides small-to-medium business manage and secure IT environments and cloud computing platforms. Professional social network LinkedIn.com is going public on Thursday and they are looking to raise $274 million as part of the offering. The price of the shares will be launched at between $32-$35. This would give them about a $3 billion valuation. LinkedIn will be traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol “LNKD.” In 2010, LinkedIn’s revenue doubled to $243 million and their net income was $15.4 million. [BusinessInsider]

Ari Balogh is the former CTO and EVP of Products at Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO). Now he is bringing his experience at a major Internet media company to Internet toolbar company StumbleUpon.com as the VP of engineering. He will have a major focus on the “recommendation technology” at StumbleUpon. Balogh will also be extending StumbleUpon’s development of the open-source Hadoop database HBase. Balogh will report to StumbleUpon CEO Garrett Camp. StumbleUpon has 15 million monthly users and hits one billion recommendations per month. According to a leaked screenshot by an employee at Wireless Xcessories Group, Samsung has renamed the Galaxy S II for the U.S. launch.
