Nissan’s Leaf to Home System Uses EV to Provide Electricity to Homes
Nissan’s EV Leaf will come with a “Leaf to Home” system option in Japan by March of 2012. The system will allow users to plug their homes into their cars to charge, using the Leaf’s stored electricity. Bloomberg reports that Nissan hopes to sell 1.5 million electric vehicles within the next six years.
Gizmodo reports that the concept for the Leaf to Home charging was the result of post-Fukushima disaster brainstorming. Areas of Japan are still experiencing blackouts as a result of the disaster, and a fully-charged Leaf battery could provide two days worth of energy for a house experiencing a power shortage.
